The Lockwood Theater Company grew out of and is grounded in the rich theatrical tradition of Northfield, Minnesota.
The Company takes its name from Northfield’s first theater building, the Lockwood Opera House, which stood as a silent witness to the James-Younger Gangs infamous bank raid of 1876. The original location of the Opera House was on the west side of Division Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets.
The Company owes a debt of gratitude to organizations such as the former Northfield Musical Theater (NMT) and the Northfield Arts Guild (NAG). Many Lockwood Company cast and crew members began their Northfield theater experiences with NMT or NAG. Many of them continue their association with NAG’s theater program.
Signature Production
The Company’s signature production is Jesse – the original musical melodrama, Northfield’s treasured musical
retelling of the notorious train and bank robber’s story. A rollicking good time for audience and cast alike, this family-friendly show is filled with great songs and dialogue that trace Jesse’s life with his beloved wife, Zee, including the famed Northfield Raid.
Performed in the style of turn-of-the-century music hall melodramas, the audience is strongly encouraged to loudly cheer the heroes and hiss at the villains as the story unfolds through comedy and, of course, tragedy.
The show was written by Minnesota theater legends Bob and Marion Moulton. The clever and engaging lyrics were written by Vern Sutton, well-known as a writer/performer on Prairie Home Companion. The melody lines for the songs are by William Huckaby and the orchestration of the entire show was fully realized by St. Olaf College music instructor, Donna Paulsen.
Jesse – the original melodrama is traditionally performed in September during the Defeat of Jesse James Days week; the week after Labor Day.
